Has anyone tried the technique of purposely making a fool of yourself in front of people?

I heard that one thing that might help anxiety is to basically purposely make a fool of yourself and embarrass yourself in front of people. Sort of how people with phobias can be treated by exposing themselves to what they fear which over time makes them realize that there is nothing to actual fear about it. I've struggled with social anxiety my whole life and despite constantly putting myself out in social situations which make me extremely uncomfortable I have seen very little improvement over the years. I'm thinking about now taking it a step farther and doing what's basically the most frightening thing I can to myself. Just coming up to strangers and talking to them like a fool and get them to think that I'm an idiot. Anyone tried something similar with any success?
